Hi Everyone

I have recently received a garagelabs.com Automation Board from Seeed Studios.  I am unable to upload any programs to it.  When uploading from the Arduino IDE it resets the board OK, lights flash, relays click as they do at power up, no comms occurs and I get a no sync error from the stk_500 uploader program.   I have -

  • Identified the correct com port
  • Tried two FTDI USB Serial adapters. One a Sparkfun 3.3V FTDI Basic.  The other a Freetronics unit switchable between 3.3V and 5V - tired both voltages with no difference in behaviour
  • Tried a number of recent versions of the Arduino IDE environment
  • Tried two machines - one Windows 10, the other Windows 8.1 no luck.  I am able to program Arduino Leonardo, Uno and Freetronics Etherten boards from the Arduino IDE on both these machines

I am keen to get this board working.  My company Incub8 does a some interesting work producing commercial automation solutions using open source technologies.  We are looking to refresh hardware on a project we undertook 6 years ago where we installed an Arduino/BeagleBoard combination to  control security gates and turnstiles at a regional port.  The automation board is ideal as it lets us reduce the component count for the Arduino side of things from 4 to 1.  We are now looking at renewing the existing 12 gates and extending the system to another two locations and around 50 gates.

Any suggestions - do I need a particular FTDI adapter?  I assume the bootloader is installed as I get correct activity on reset.  Have I simply got a faulty board.

Hello Peter,

You can solve this problem re-burning the bootloader. You can do it easily using another Arduino as ISP. Here is a tutorial explaining how to do it:

Best,

Hi Marcello

Thanks for the tip, I burnt the bootloader using an USBasp tool and all works now.   I figured that because the relays were cycling through on startup a bootloader was installed - in fact with the bootloader installed it does not do this.

Thanks Again

Peter,

Nice to hear that. Let me know if you need further assistance.

All the best!
